Chinese President Xi Jinping conducted an inspection tour of the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, an island in south China’s Guangdong Province, on Thursday morning. His visit underscored the significant progress and deepening integration between Hengqin and the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR).
During the visit, President Xi, who is also the general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, engaged warmly with residents of the Macao SAR who have established their lives and businesses in the cooperation zone. He also met with individuals involved in the zone’s planning, construction, management, and services.
Xi’s arrival in Macao on Wednesday was in conjunction with the 25th anniversary of Macao’s return to China and the inauguration of its sixth-term government. The president’s presence highlighted the central government’s support for Macao’s continued development and integration with the Chinese mainland.
During his inspection, Xi visited an exhibition hall where photographs, charts, and models showcased the integrated development achievements of Hengqin and Macao in recent years. The exhibits highlighted the phased accomplishments and the growing synergy between the two regions.
Since the establishment of the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone, significant progress has been made across various sectors. The level of integration between Hengqin and Macao has steadily improved, enhancing economic collaboration and social ties. President Xi noted that support for Macao’s appropriately diversified economic development has become increasingly evident.
“The central government’s decision to develop Hengqin and build the cooperation zone is absolutely correct,” Xi remarked, emphasizing the positive outcomes of the initiative. The cooperation zone serves as a strategic platform to facilitate Macao’s economic diversification and deepen its integration with the neighboring Guangdong Province.
The Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin is a critical element in China’s broader strategy to promote regional development and openness. It aims to create new opportunities for businesses, foster innovation, and enhance the well-being of people in both regions.
