Chinese Premier Li Qiang Engages in ‘1+10’ Dialogue with Global Economic Leaders

Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Monday held a ‘1+10’ dialogue in Beijing with the heads of ten international economic organizations, emphasizing China’s commitment to global governance and economic cooperation. The meeting was themed ‘Building Consensus on Development to Promote Global Common Prosperity.’

In his remarks, Premier Li highlighted the challenges facing the global economy, noting that ‘world economic growth lacks momentum, and economic globalization and multilateralism face obstacles and challenges, giving rise to more uncertainties.’ He called on all parties to focus on development, create a peaceful and stable environment, improve global governance, maintain stable and unimpeded global industrial and supply chains, and foster new drivers for economic growth.

Li reiterated China’s role as a firm defender of economic globalization and multilateralism. He stated that China’s economy has injected strong impetus into the world economy for decades, demonstrating distinctive features. ‘China’s economy is underpinned by a system that ensures steady growth, has additional space for sustaining growth, and produces positive spillovers,’ he said. ‘The underlying logic supporting China’s positive economic outlook remains unchanged, and the overall goal and principle of benefiting the world remain unchanged—this is the biggest certainty China’s economy provides to the world economy.’

Expressing China’s willingness to work with all parties, Li pledged to uphold the basic norms governing international relations and the multilateral trading system. He emphasized China’s support for international economic organizations playing an important role in global governance and added that China will actively undertake international obligations commensurate with its capabilities.

The dialogue included in-depth exchanges with prominent leaders such as Dilma Rousseff, President of the New Development Bank; Ajay Banga, President of the World Bank Group; Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund; Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization; Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary-General of the UN Conference on Trade and Development; Gilbert Houngbo, Director-General of the International Labor Organization; Mathias Cormann, Secretary-General of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development; Agustín Carstens, General Manager of the Bank for International Settlements; Klaas Knot, Chair of the Financial Stability Board; and Jin Liqun, President of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.

The heads of the international organizations applauded China’s major development achievements and its positive economic outlook. They noted that China’s commitment to high-standard opening up has provided valuable stability and strong impetus for world peace and development. They expressed strong confidence in China’s economic transformation and future prospects.

All parties expressed readiness to work more closely with China to jointly uphold multilateralism and globalization, prioritize development issues, uphold free trade, increase support for developing countries, address global challenges such as climate change, foster inclusive global growth, and promote shared prosperity and sustainable development.
