Decoupling from China Like ‘Shooting Oneself in the Foot,’ Says Chinese Ambassador

In a stirring address at the 2024 annual gala of the China General Chamber of Commerce in Chicago, Chinese Ambassador to the US Xie Feng cautioned against the dangers of economic decoupling from China. Speaking via video link to an audience of business leaders and officials, Ambassador Xie emphasized that such a move would be akin to “shooting oneself in the foot.”

“China and the United States have long benefited from robust economic cooperation,” Ambassador Xie remarked. “Our collaboration serves as an anchor and stabilizer for both nations’ prosperity. To sever these ties would not only harm our economies but also unsettle global markets.”

He urged attendees to continue leveraging the role of economic partnership as a means to foster stability and growth. “It is imperative that we work together to overcome challenges and build a brighter future,” he said. “Businesses play a crucial role in bridging gaps and promoting mutual understanding between our countries.”

The event highlighted the significance of Sino-American relations in today’s interconnected world. Many attendees echoed the ambassador’s sentiments, noting that collaboration and open dialogue are essential for addressing global economic challenges.

Ambassador Xie’s comments come at a time when discussions about trade policies and international cooperation are increasingly prevalent. His message underscored the importance of maintaining strong economic ties and the potential repercussions of isolationist approaches.
