PowerChina Eyes Expanded Role in Jamaica’s Renewable Energy Sector

PowerChina, a leading international construction group, is in advanced talks with the Jamaican government to establish a significant footprint in the country and the wider Caribbean region. He Yuxin, the company’s executive vice president, expressed optimism about the future of new energy projects in Jamaica, highlighting efforts to promote a carbon-neutral agenda and enhance national energy security.

“Jamaica is the first Caribbean country where we established [a] representative office,” He said during a recent press briefing at PowerChina’s Beijing headquarters. “In recent years, we have attached more importance to new energy developments in Jamaica and have made meaningful progress so far.”

Since 2009, PowerChina has been pursuing projects such as the Harmony Cove Hotel and the Mahogany Vale Hydropower Project. According to He, these initiatives are becoming increasingly feasible under the Belt and Road Initiative, China’s global infrastructure development strategy.

“We believe that our involvement in Jamaica’s renewable energy sector will greatly aid the island’s efforts towards achieving energy security and a carbon-neutral future,” He added.

PowerChina’s potential expansion in the Caribbean aligns with the region’s growing focus on sustainable development and renewable energy. The company’s expertise in hydropower and infrastructure development positions it as a valuable partner for Caribbean nations seeking to enhance their energy capacities while promoting environmental sustainability.
