China announced on Friday an expansion of its visa-free policy to citizens from 38 countries, a move expected to bolster cross-border travel and enhance international connectivity.
Effective from November 30, 2024, through December 31, 2025, holders of ordinary passports from 38 countries, including Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Malta, Estonia, Latvia, and Japan, will be eligible to enter China without a visa under a trial program. This initiative extends the maximum visa-free stay from 15 days to 30 days and recognizes exchange visits as a valid reason for entry.
Lin Jian, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, revealed the update during a daily press briefing. “This policy aims to facilitate international exchange and cooperation, promote tourism, and foster closer ties with countries around the world,” Lin stated.
Under the new measures, citizens from the eligible countries can enter China without a visa for purposes such as business, tourism, visiting family and friends, exchange programs, or transiting, provided their stay does not exceed 30 days.
The expansion of the visa-free policy is anticipated to significantly boost tourism and business travel to China, offering new opportunities for international collaboration and cultural exchange. Observers believe this move will strengthen China’s global ties and contribute positively to its economy.
