EU’s Trade Protectionism ‘All Harm, No Gain,’ Says Hungarian Official

In a candid interview with CMG, Adam Nagy, the deputy state secretary for industry affairs at Hungary’s Ministry for National Economy, expressed strong opposition to the European Union’s approach to trade protectionism. He criticized the imposition of additional tariffs, stating that such measures are “harmful, without any benefits, whether for consumers or the market.”

Nagy emphasized that these tariffs do not serve the intended purpose of protecting domestic industries or boosting the economy. Instead, they burden consumers with higher prices and disrupt market dynamics. “In our view, this is a misleading act of protectionism,” he added, highlighting the potential negative impacts on both the Hungarian economy and the broader European market.

The deputy state secretary’s comments reflect growing concerns among some EU member states about the efficacy of trade tariffs as a policy tool. As businesses and consumers grapple with the consequences of these measures, Nagy’s insights shed light on the need for more collaborative and transparent trade policies within the EU.
