China announced on Monday its decision to file a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) over the European Union’s (EU) final anti-subsidy measures targeting Chinese electric vehicles (EVs). A spokesperson from the Ministry of Commerce stated that this move is aimed at safeguarding the development interests of the EV industry and promoting global cooperation in the green transformation.
The spokesperson expressed regret that the EU proceeded with imposing high countervailing duties on Chinese EVs despite China’s earlier appeal to the WTO regarding the EU’s initial anti-subsidy measures. This action was taken despite objections from EU member state governments, industry stakeholders, and the public.
“China firmly opposes the EU’s decision,” the spokesperson said, arguing that the measures lack factual and legal basis, violate WTO rules, and represent an abuse of trade remedy measures under the guise of countervailing actions, amounting to trade protectionism.
China is calling on the EU to acknowledge its errors, promptly correct these unlawful practices, and work together to safeguard the stability of the global EV industry and supply chain, as well as the broader economic and trade relations between China and the EU.
The move underscores the growing tensions between China and the EU over trade policies affecting the burgeoning EV sector. As the global community pushes toward green energy and sustainable transportation solutions, collaborative efforts are deemed crucial to achieving shared environmental goals.
Industry analysts note that the dispute could have significant implications for international trade and the global EV market. The outcome of China’s complaint to the WTO may set a precedent for how similar cases are handled in the future.
