China’s Anti-Dumping Measures on EU Brandy Comply with WTO Rules

In a move stirring global trade discussions, China’s Ministry of Commerce announced that its anti-dumping measures against imported brandy from the European Union are legitimate trade remedies initiated by domestic industry and fully comply with World Trade Organization (WTO) regulations.

On Tuesday, China imposed temporary anti-dumping duties on EU brandy imports, just days after the EU voted to impose tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles (EVs). The timing has intensified conversations about escalating trade tensions between the two economies.

The ministry’s spokesperson emphasized that the anti-dumping actions are lawful and necessary. “These measures are a necessary response to protect our domestic industry and are in full compliance with WTO rules,” the spokesperson stated.

China criticized the EU’s anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese EVs, asserting it was not prompted by industry requests and lacks solid factual and legal foundation. “The EU measures represent a clear violation of WTO regulations, using trade remedies as a guise for protectionism,” the spokesperson argued.

Defending its burgeoning EV industry, China has lodged a strong protest with the WTO. “To firmly defend the legitimate development rights of China’s EV industry, China is bringing the relevant anti-subsidy measures before the WTO dispute settlement mechanism,” the ministry announced.

The Ministry of Commerce urged the EU to rectify its practices to safeguard broader economic and trade interests between China and the EU. “We hope the EU will correct its practices promptly to maintain the healthy development of bilateral trade relations,” the spokesperson concluded.
