Digital Agriculture Paves Way for ASEAN Growth, Says Cambodian Official

Digital agriculture is emerging as a transformative force for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), offering new growth opportunities and enhancing competitiveness, according to Prum Somany, director of the Department of International Cooperation of the Cambodian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries.

Speaking at the second China-ASEAN Digital Agriculture Forum, Somany emphasized the pivotal role that digital technologies play in modernizing agricultural practices across ASEAN countries. He highlighted how embracing digital solutions can boost productivity, improve supply chain efficiency, and open up new markets for farmers in the region.

“Digital agriculture not only revolutionizes the way we cultivate and harvest crops but also strengthens our regional cooperation,” Somany said. “By integrating technology into our agricultural systems, we can achieve sustainable development and enhance food security for all ASEAN member states.”

The China-ASEAN Digital Agriculture Forum serves as a platform for stakeholders from government, industry, and academia to share insights and collaborate on advancing digital agriculture initiatives. The forum aims to foster partnerships that support innovation and the adoption of cutting-edge technologies in the agricultural sector.

Cambodia, with its rich agricultural heritage, stands to benefit significantly from digital transformation in agriculture. By leveraging tools such as data analytics, precision farming, and blockchain for supply chain traceability, Cambodian farmers can increase yields, reduce costs, and access wider markets.

Somany called on ASEAN nations to work together in implementing digital strategies that support farmers and rural communities. “Collaboration is key to overcoming challenges and ensuring that the benefits of digital agriculture are shared equitably,” he noted.

The focus on digital agriculture aligns with ASEAN’s broader goals of economic integration and sustainable development. As technology continues to reshape industries globally, ASEAN countries are poised to harness digital innovations to drive growth in the agricultural sector, benefiting millions across the region.
