China has witnessed a remarkable surge in urbanization over the past 75 years, with the urbanization rate climbing by 55.52 percentage points to reach 66.16 percent by the end of 2023, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Monday.
Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, the country has undergone the largest and fastest urbanization process in world history. The number of cities has expanded from just 129 in 1949 to 694 by 2023. These cities are now home to a combined population of 673.13 million people, a dramatic increase from the 39.49 million urban residents recorded at the end of 1949.
“Over the past 75 years, China’s urban landscape has transformed beyond recognition,” the NBS stated in its report. “This unprecedented urban growth reflects the country’s rapid economic development and social progress.”
The growth in urban population is not just limited to major metropolitan areas. Currently, there are 29 cities with populations exceeding 5 million and 11 cities with over 10 million residents. Notably, China’s less-developed western region is experiencing significant urban growth, indicating a more balanced urbanization process. Of the 11 prefecture-level cities added since 2011, nine are located in the western region.
This trend is further supported by policy changes aimed at easing migration from rural to urban areas. China has lifted almost all restrictions on household registration in cities with less than 3 million permanent residents, making it more convenient for rural residents to settle permanently in urban areas.
The ongoing urbanization is expected to continue driving China’s economic growth, providing new opportunities for development and investment across the country.
