The Chinese mainland has announced the suspension of zero tariffs on 34 agricultural products originating from the Taiwan region, effective September 25.
The Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council stated that the policy of exempting import duties on these products—including fresh fruits, vegetables, and seafood—will be halted. “The relevant import tariffs on these agricultural products will be applied in accordance with the current regulations,” the commission said.
This decision comes in response to unilateral actions by authorities in the Taiwan region, which have imposed discriminatory bans and restrictions on exports of products from the Chinese mainland. These measures have been cited as severely hindering economic and trade cooperation across the Taiwan Strait, according to China Media Group.
The suspension is expected to impact cross-strait trade dynamics, affecting businesses and investors engaged in the agricultural sectors of both the Chinese mainland and the Taiwan region. Analysts suggest that this move underscores the importance of maintaining equitable trade practices to foster economic growth and stability in the region.
Stakeholders in the agricultural industry are advised to stay informed about the new tariff regulations and adjust their trade strategies accordingly.
