China’s Mid-Autumn Festival Travel Surges 37.9% on First Day

China witnessed a remarkable surge in travel on Sunday, the first day of the three-day Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, with transportation sectors across the nation handling a staggering 215.92 million passenger trips. This represents a 37.9 percent increase compared to the same period last year, according to data from the Ministry of Transport.

The significant uptick highlights the enthusiasm of the Chinese people to reunite with family and friends during the traditional festival, which holds immense cultural significance. The Mid-Autumn Festival, falling on September 17 this year, is a time for admiring the full moon and sharing mooncakes, symbolizing unity and togetherness.

Highway travel dominated the transportation landscape, accounting for the lion’s share with 196.45 million passenger trips. This reflects the preference for road travel among many residents, enabling them to reach even the most remote hometowns and villages.

Railways also experienced substantial activity, recording 17.09 million passenger trips. China’s extensive railway network continues to play a crucial role in facilitating efficient and comfortable long-distance travel.

Air travel saw 1.84 million passenger trips, while water transport handled 544,100 trips. These modes of transport provide essential connectivity for both domestic and international travelers, contributing to overall mobility during the holiday period.

The surge in passenger trips underscores the vitality of China’s transportation infrastructure and the eagerness of people to embrace traditional festivities.
