As Rwanda accelerates its green transition, electric motorbikes and buses are reshaping its transport sector. Supported by Chinese technology and infrastructure, Rwanda is emerging as a leader in Africa’s shift to sustainable transport. The deepening China-Rwanda partnership exemplifies how African needs are driving investments in green development ahead of the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit.
Electric Motorbikes: Rwanda’s Clean Mobility Drive
Known as the “land of a thousand hills,” Rwanda’s challenging terrain and growing urban population have made electric motorbikes, or e-motos, an ideal solution for transportation. Moto-taxi drivers in Kigali are rapidly adopting e-motos, which offer 83 percent lower carbon emissions compared to petrol-powered alternatives. This shift is a significant step towards Rwanda’s ambitious green transport goals.
Chinese contribution to this transformation has been pivotal. Over 70 percent of Rwanda’s national highways are constructed by Chinese firms such as the China Road and Bridge Corporation and the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation. These developments have facilitated smoother and more efficient operations for the country’s 26,000 registered moto-taxis.
Ampersand, a Rwandan electric motorbike startup, has accelerated the deployment of over 500 e-motos. Their network of battery swap stations is powered by Rwanda’s hydropower grid, much of which benefits from Chinese technology. “Rwanda is our home and the perfect launchpad for East Africa’s electric mobility,” said Josh Whale, CEO of Ampersand.
Ahead of FOCAC 2024: Deepening China-Rwanda Partnership
The upcoming 2024 FOCAC Summit highlights the strengthening ties between China and Rwanda. Investments in green development and sustainable infrastructure showcase a mutual commitment to environmental stewardship and economic growth. China’s support in Rwanda’s electric transport sector underscores a collaborative approach to address climate change while promoting technological advancement.
As Rwanda positions itself at the forefront of Africa’s green mobility revolution, the synergy with Chinese enterprises and technology provides a model for sustainable development that other nations might emulate.
