China has taken a significant step towards a sustainable future by unveiling comprehensive guidelines aimed at accelerating the green transition across all sectors of its economy and society. The Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council recently issued these guidelines, setting ambitious targets for environmental protection and sustainable development.
Ambitious Goals for 2030 and Beyond
By 2030, China aims to achieve “remarkable results” in green transition, significantly reducing its environmental footprint. The guidelines outline that by 2035, the country intends to establish a green, low-carbon, and circular economic system, effectively building what is termed a “Beautiful China.”
Key Focus Areas
The guidelines emphasize several critical areas:
- Optimizing Land Development and Protection: Strategies to balance development with the preservation of natural resources.
- Industrial and Energy Sector Transformation: Promoting green and low-carbon practices in industrial processes and energy production.
- Transport Sector and Urban-Rural Development: Encouraging sustainable practices in transportation and infrastructure development.
Specific Targets
Among the quantitative goals set for 2030 are:
- Expansion of the Green Industry: The energy conservation and environmental protection industry is expected to reach a scale of approximately 15 trillion yuan (about $2.1 trillion).
- Increase in Non-Fossil Energy Consumption: The proportion of non-fossil fuels in energy consumption is projected to rise to about 25%.
- Enhanced Hydropower Capacity: Installed capacity of pumped storage hydropower is set to exceed 120 million kilowatts.
Further targets include reducing the carbon emission intensity of commercial transport per unit of turnover by about 9.5% compared to 2020 levels. Additionally, the annual utilization of bulk solid waste is expected to reach around 4.5 billion tonnes, with the output rate of main resources increasing by approximately 45% over 2020 figures.
Moving Towards a Sustainable Future
These guidelines signify China’s commitment to environmental sustainability and its role in combating global climate change. By setting clear objectives and actionable plans, China is positioning itself to lead in the global shift towards a greener economy.
