Chinese Manufacturing Shines at Paris Olympics Through Yiwu’s Global Impact

In July 2024, the 33rd Summer Olympics opened grandly in Paris. Under the global spotlight, spectators witnessed not only the fierce determination of athletes from around the world but also the confident emergence of “Made in China” products on the international stage. A whirlwind of Chinese intelligent manufacturing is sweeping through Paris and beyond.

Yiwu: China’s Manufacturing Hub

As China stands as the world’s manufacturing powerhouse, Yiwu shines as a pivotal hub within the nation. According to Yiwu customs data, in the first half of this year, Yiwu’s total import and export value reached 324.77 billion yuan (approximately $44.97 billion), marking a year-on-year increase of 20.8 percent. Exports alone accounted for 288.03 billion yuan, up 21.4 percent from the previous year.

Notably, exports of sports goods and equipment experienced significant growth, rising by 42.3 percent to reach an export value of 5.02 billion yuan. This surge is propelled by high-profile sports events like the European Championship and the Olympics, igniting a global passion for sports.

Yiwu’s vast product base and comprehensive industrial chain empower it with robust capabilities for rapid production and delivery. This advantage enables Yiwu to secure orders for multiple global events, including the Olympics. As a “world’s supermarket,” Yiwu showcases the achievements of Chinese manufacturing since the country’s reform and opening-up.

From small decorations, Olympic mascots, and souvenirs adorning Paris to various sportswear, equipment, and digital screens at Olympic venues, products labeled “Made in China” and “Made in Yiwu, China” are omnipresent.

Evolution of Chinese Manufacturing

Yiwu exemplifies the growth trajectory of Chinese manufacturing. From the early days of small workshop-style processing, China has evolved into an era of “smart factories” and “digital factories.” The industry has transitioned from low value-added original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to producers of high-end products infused with technological innovation and vitality.

The business model has shifted from individual enterprises operating independently to an integrated industrial ecosystem that encompasses upstream and downstream design, manufacturing, sales, and export along the supply chain. Represented by Yiwu’s manufacturing, China’s industry has iteratively upgraded, with independent brands emerging and gradually achieving high-quality global expansion.

Smart home appliances, new energy vehicles, and high-end professional equipment are being shipped from Chinese ports to markets worldwide, marking an impressive transformation from the “world’s factory.” For 14 consecutive years, China’s manufacturing sector has topped the world in scale, holding a significant position in the global industrial division of labor and supply chain systems.

Simultaneously, the manufacturing sector is accelerating its transition towards high-end, intelligent, and green development. “Made in China” is steadily transforming into “Intelligent Manufacturing in China,” with substantial improvements in technological levels and product added value, making Chinese products a focal point on the international stage.

At the Paris Olympics, Chinese innovation was prominently featured. Sports mats used in judo and wrestling events were made in China. For instance, judo mats created by Taishan Sports incorporate smart chips and flexible piezoelectric film technology. These advancements allow athletes and coaches to obtain relevant data such as force, speed, and movement trajectory, enhancing training and performance.
