Former Italian Ministry of Economic Development State Undersecretary Michele Geraci has voiced his concerns over Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s decision to exit the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). In a candid interview with CGTN’s Guan Xin, Geraci described the move as an “earthquake” that has effectively reset Italy’s relations with China.
According to Geraci, the abrupt withdrawal from the BRI has necessitated a rebuilding of diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations. He suggests that Prime Minister Meloni now faces the challenge of “building a small house” to re-establish the relationship.
Geraci emphasized the importance of consistency and continuity in fostering successful relations with China. He warned that erratic policy shifts and sudden changes can lead to instability, advocating instead for a steady and reliable approach to international engagement.
“China-Italy relations need consistency,” Geraci asserted, highlighting that fluctuations and unpredictable decisions can undermine mutual trust and cooperation. His remarks underscore the potential ramifications of Italy’s exit from the BRI and call for a more measured and stable foreign policy.
