Xinjiang Achieves Record-Breaking Wheat Yields in Summer Harvest

Northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, a major grain-producing area, has set new national records for wheat yields during this year’s summer harvest.

An expert panel from the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs certified that winter wheat fields measuring 500 mu (about 33 hectares), 1,200 mu, and 10,490 mu all achieved record-breaking per-mu yields. A remarkable yield of 795.8 kilograms per mu was recorded in a 500-mu wheat field located in Huocheng County. This area shares similar climatic and soil conditions with France’s Provence, owing to their comparable latitudes.

“We selected the wheat variety ‘Shidong 0358’ for cultivation, implemented water-efficient irrigation techniques, and applied foliar fertilizers to enhance plant growth,” said You Chengyong from the agricultural service station in Huocheng. He noted that Xinjiang has already completed 70 percent of its summer grain harvest.

“The increase in per-unit wheat yield showcases the overall improvement of grain production in Xinjiang,” said Tang Yiwu, an official from the regional agriculture and rural affairs department. He emphasized that high yields previously limited to experimental fields are now being realized across extensive wheat-growing areas in the region.
