Indonesia has clarified its stance on proposed import tariffs of up to 200 percent on certain products, asserting that the policy is not intended to target any specific country. Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan addressed concerns in Jakarta on July 6, emphasizing the inclusive nature of the tariff measures.
“We are not targeting any particular country, especially China. All measures are taken based on our national interest,” Luhut stated, as reported by Antara News. He highlighted that the tariffs, which have already been extended on several textile products, apply uniformly to all imported goods regardless of their origin.
Luhut underscored the significance of China’s role in Indonesia’s economic landscape. “China remains a crucial strategic and comprehensive partner for us in trade and investment,” he said. “We are committed to maintaining this relationship through ongoing communication and dialogue regarding policy changes.”
The minister’s comments come in response to earlier statements by Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan, who had proposed imposing higher import duties on textile products, specifically mentioning China, in an effort to protect domestic industries. The proposal had raised concerns about potential tensions between Indonesia and one of its key trading partners.
Addressing these concerns, Luhut reassured that Indonesia’s policies are formulated with a focus on national interests without singling out any nation. He reiterated the government’s dedication to fostering strong economic ties and cooperation with global partners, including China.
Indonesia’s move to adjust import tariffs reflects its broader strategy to bolster domestic industries while engaging in fair trade practices. The government’s approach aims to balance the protection of local businesses with its commitments to international trade agreements.
The clarification from Indonesia’s officials is expected to alleviate apprehensions among international investors and trading partners. By reinforcing its stance on non-discriminatory policies, Indonesia seeks to sustain its position as a key player in the regional and global economy.
