At the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) 15th Annual Meeting of the New Champions in Dalian, China, artificial intelligence (AI) emerged as a central theme among global leaders and innovators.
Jeremy Jurgens, Managing Director at the WEF and head of the Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, shared his insights on the transformative impact of AI during an interview with CGTN’s Michael Wang.
Jurgens emphasized that AI is not a threat to human employment but rather a complementary tool that enhances human skills. “AI can help workers move up the skills ladder,” he stated, highlighting the technology’s potential to enable individuals to engage in more complex and rewarding tasks.
He acknowledged concerns about AI’s potential to displace certain jobs but assured that it would also create new opportunities. “As AI automates routine tasks, humans can focus on areas that require critical thinking, creativity, and emotional intelligence,” Jurgens explained.
Jurgens also commended China’s rapid innovation ecosystem, noting its strong technical and mathematical foundation. “China’s technological innovation is going global,” he observed, attributing this growth to the country’s investment in education and technology. He suggested that China’s approach serves as a model for integrating AI into various sectors while supporting workforce development.
The discussions at the Dalian meeting reflect a broader global conversation on how AI can be leveraged to benefit economies and societies. Jurgens’ insights contribute to an understanding of AI as a tool for empowerment rather than displacement, encouraging collaborative efforts to harness its potential.
