In a move to strengthen regional integration and boost China’s open economy, the nation’s top political advisory body convened a virtual consultation session on Friday. The focus? The pivotal roles of Hong Kong and Macao in developing new systems for a higher-standard open economy.
The National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), chaired by Wang Huning—a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the CPPCC National Committee—gathered experts and advisors from across the country.
Wang underscored the necessity of in-depth research on key issues concerning Hong Kong and Macao’s contributions to China’s economic advancement. He urged for practical and targeted policy recommendations to support the implementation of national strategies that foster the development of Hong Kong and Macao.
Participants included twelve members of the CPPCC National Committee who shared insights via video link from Beijing, Fujian, Hong Kong, Macao, and other regions. Central to their discussions was the enhancement of coordination of economic regulations and mechanisms across Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao. Such coordination aims to facilitate the efficient flow of people, goods, capital, and data, thus improving market integration.
Among the recommendations were proposals to consolidate Hong Kong’s status as an international financial, shipping, and trade hub. Additionally, leveraging Macao’s unique position as a platform for cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries was highlighted. Expanding smooth and convenient international connections was also a key topic.
Officials from relevant departments provided valuable information and engaged in discussions with the national political advisors. These thematic consultation sessions are a regular practice for the CPPCC National Committee, fulfilling its roles in political consultation, democratic oversight, and participation in state affairs deliberation and administration.
