China Attributes Escalating Trade Tensions with EU to European Actions, Calls for Dialogue

China’s Ministry of Commerce has attributed the escalation of trade frictions with the European Union (EU) to actions taken by the European side, calling for dialogue to prevent a potential trade war. In a statement released on Friday, the ministry asserted that “the responsibility lies solely with the EU side” regarding the current tensions.

The ministry highlighted that China does not desire the ongoing trade disputes and expressed regret over what it perceives as the EU’s continuous provocations. “It was the European side that regrettably kept provoking trade disputes,” the statement emphasized.

According to the ministry, since the beginning of the year, the EU has implemented 31 restrictive trade and investment measures against China, including 25 trade remedies. These actions have “seriously undermined China-EU economic and trade cooperation,” the ministry noted.

Despite these challenges, China maintains that it has demonstrated an open and cooperative attitude, actively seeking to resolve issues through dialogue and consultation. The ministry underscored China’s commitment to adhering to World Trade Organization rules and its cautious use of trade remedy measures.

“In the face of the EU’s protectionism, China is determined to safeguard its legitimate and lawful interests,” the ministry stated. It also expressed hope that the EU would address the differences through dialogue to prevent trade frictions from escalating or spiraling out of control.

The ministry’s remarks come amid growing concerns over international trade relations and highlight the importance of constructive communication between China and the EU to maintain stable economic ties.
