Dalian Mayor Chen Shaowang Unveils Vision for Modern Coastal City

Dalian’s identity and future are deeply intertwined with the ocean, according to Chen Shaowang, deputy secretary of the Communist Party of China’s Dalian Municipal Committee and mayor of the city. In a recent interview with CGTN’s Guan Xin, Chen highlighted the city’s commitment to actively building a modern coastal metropolis that leverages its maritime heritage.

“The ocean defines who we are and where we’re heading,” Chen stated, emphasizing the strategic importance of the maritime economy to Dalian’s development. He outlined plans to enhance maritime industries, promote sustainable oceanic practices, and strengthen the city’s position as a key hub in Northeast Asia.

This year, Dalian is hosting the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting of the New Champions, a gathering where global leaders and innovators explore the future of ocean cities. “Participants will have the opportunity to engage with Dalian’s vision and collaborate on shaping sustainable and innovative coastal urban development,” Chen added.

The focus on ocean cities at the forum underscores the global significance of maritime economies and the challenges they face, such as environmental conservation, technological innovation, and sustainable growth. Dalian’s proactive approach serves as a model for other coastal cities aiming to balance economic advancement with ecological responsibility.

As Dalian continues to harness its oceanic strengths, the city’s initiatives are expected to contribute significantly to regional economic integration and international cooperation in maritime affairs.
