Delhi Airport Resumes Normal Operations After Brief Power Outage

New Delhi, India — Operations at India’s busiest airport, the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in Delhi, returned to normal on Monday after a brief power outage caused minor disruptions within the terminals.

According to a spokesperson for Delhi International Airport, a “voltage imbalance from the Delhi Transco Limited (DTL) grid briefly impacted all IGI terminals, affecting baggage acceptance and e-gates.”

The outage, which lasted approximately seven minutes, resulted in the temporary suspension of air conditioning systems and other essential services within the terminals. Back-up power systems were activated within minutes, and the main power supply was restored shortly thereafter.

The brief interruption led to minor delays at check-in and boarding as airline officials waited for computer systems to power up. Passengers reported standing in long queues, with some expressing concerns over social media about the potential impact on their travel plans.

“We apologize for any inconvenience caused to our passengers,” the airport spokesperson said. “Our teams worked swiftly to ensure that all systems were back online, minimizing disruptions.”

One airline source indicated that while the outage was short-lived, it occurred during a critical period, as June is typically a busy month for air travel in India due to school summer holidays.

Temperatures in New Delhi have soared to record-breaking levels in recent weeks, with water shortages and frequent power cuts adding to the challenges faced by residents and infrastructure providers alike.

India’s aviation market is among the fastest-growing in the world. Domestic air travel is expected to double to 300 million passengers from a record 152 million in 2023, according to government data. The incident highlights the importance of robust infrastructure to support this rapid growth.

Travelers planning to fly from or to Delhi are advised to check with their airlines for any updates or potential delays.
