Paris, October 2023 — Christian de Boissieu, an esteemed French economist and emeritus professor at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, has cautioned European nations against decoupling from China, describing it as the “worst solution” for Europe.
In a recent interview with CGTN, de Boissieu emphasized the deep interdependence between Europe and China. “Countries like France and China are living in the same boat,” he remarked. “Working together brings mutual ‘win-win’ benefits.”
The economist highlighted the significance of Sino-European cooperation in addressing global challenges such as economic recovery, climate change, and technological innovation. He urged policymakers to strengthen ties rather than sever them, noting that collaboration fosters growth and stability on both continents.
De Boissieu’s comments come amid discussions in European circles about reducing reliance on Chinese markets and supply chains. He warned that such moves could have adverse effects on European economies, potentially leading to decreased competitiveness and innovation.
“Economic decoupling is not a viable strategy,” he stated. “We should focus on building bridges, not walls, to ensure a prosperous future for all.”
