In a significant move to strengthen China-UK economic ties, China’s Premier Li Qiang met with a delegation from the China-Britain Business Council (CBBC) on Wednesday. The delegation was led by CBBC Chair Sherard Cowper-Coles and marked the 70th anniversary of the council.
Premier Li congratulated the CBBC on its milestone anniversary and lauded its longstanding role in fostering trade and dialogue between China and the United Kingdom. He emphasized China’s commitment to its relationship with the UK, expressing a willingness to enhance dialogue, deepen cooperation, and respect each other’s core interests and major concerns to ensure the stable development of bilateral ties.
“China attaches great importance to its relations with the UK,” Li stated. “We are willing to intensify economic and trade exchanges, share development opportunities, and expand cooperation in finance, new energy, biomedicine, digital economy, and other fields.”
He highlighted China’s dedication to further opening up its market, promising expanded market access and strengthened service guarantees for foreign investment. “We welcome companies from the UK and other countries to continue to invest in China,” Li said, reinforcing China’s position as a favorable environment for international business.
Li also expressed hope that the CBBC and the British business community would continue to play a pivotal role in promoting mutual understanding and cooperation. He encouraged them to act as conveyors of China-UK friendship, promoters of mutually beneficial cooperation, and defenders of stable and smooth industrial and supply chains.
Sherard Cowper-Coles responded positively, expressing the CBBC’s support for China’s reform and opening-up policies and its pursuit of high-quality development. “The CBBC is willing to continue to play a bridging role and make positive contributions to promoting the development of UK-China relations and deepening bilateral cooperation,” he affirmed.
The meeting signals a mutual intent to bolster economic collaboration and could pave the way for increased investment and partnership opportunities between businesses in China and the UK.
