Chinese Embassy Denounces U.S. Tariff Increase as Violation of WTO Rules

The Chinese Embassy in the U.S. issued a statement on Wednesday condemning the recent decision by the U.S. government to increase tariffs on a range of Chinese products. The embassy stated that this action violates World Trade Organization (WTO) rules and international law, and will adversely affect American businesses and consumers.

On Tuesday, U.S. President Joe Biden announced the completion of a review of China's trade practices under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974. The review led to the decision to maintain existing tariffs on Chinese imports and implement additional tariffs on products such as electric vehicles, solar cells, semiconductors, medical products, and certain steel and aluminum products.

The Chinese Embassy warned that the new tariffs signify an escalation of protectionist policies that aim to shield U.S. manufacturers but will likely increase the cost of imported goods and impose further losses on American companies and consumers.

A spokesperson for the embassy highlighted that the WTO has determined that the U.S.'s Section 301 tariffs contravene WTO regulations and international law. The spokesperson stated, "As one of the founders of the WTO, the U.S. has not only failed to be a role model in complying with WTO rules but has taken the lead in breaching them. By doing so, the U.S. cannot embody the 'fair competition' it champions, nor can it maintain its credibility in the international community."

The embassy's statement accused the U.S. of politicizing economic issues to preserve its unilateral dominance, suggesting that these actions reveal a lack of confidence rather than strength. The embassy added that increasing tariffs on Chinese products will not resolve the U.S.'s internal challenges but will further disrupt global industrial and supply chains. It emphasized that such moves will not hinder China’s development but will strengthen the resolve of the Chinese people to progress.

"The move by the U.S. is typical protectionism, political maneuvering, and hegemonic bullying," the statement read. "It goes against President Biden's remarks of 'not seeking to contain China's development' or 'not seeking to decouple with China.' This action contradicts the spirit of mutual understanding between the two presidents and severely undermines the atmosphere of bilateral cooperation."

The embassy urged the U.S. to adhere to WTO rules and immediately revoke the tariff increases, stating that China will take all necessary measures to safeguard its rights and interests.
