China’s Pet Economy Thrives Amid Calls for Sustainable Development

The love for furry companions is blossoming across the Chinese mainland, as cats and dogs become indispensable members of many families. This surge in pet ownership has given rise to a booming pet economy, yet questions linger about its ability to achieve sustainable development.

Luo Li’an, entrepreneur and owner of a pet club in Beijing, has witnessed this growth firsthand since opening her establishment in late 2015. “The pet industry is on the rise,” Luo noted. “More people are not just keeping pets but also spending more to improve the quality of their pets’ lives.”

After nearly a decade in operation, Luo’s pet shop is attracting an increasing number of young clients. She believes that for many youths who have just entered the workforce, pets offer emotional support as they navigate interpersonal relationships and work-related stress. “That’s why many people are willing to spend money and time on their pets, which in turn brings the rapid development of the pet economy,” Luo explained.

Luo’s club frequently organizes pet-walking events for clients on weekends and holidays, fostering a community among pet owners. This is just one example of the myriad industries flourishing around pet care and companionship.

As the pet economy continues to expand, industry insiders like Luo emphasize the importance of addressing sustainability. Balancing growth with responsible practices is essential to ensure the well-being of pets and the environment alike.
