China Braces for Record 270 Million Daily Trips Over Labor Day Holiday

China is preparing for a surge in travel during the upcoming five-day Labor Day holiday, with the Ministry of Transport predicting an average of 270 million daily trips starting Wednesday.

In a press conference on Monday, the ministry indicated that the volume of travel is expected to surpass levels seen during the same periods in both 2023 and pre-pandemic 2019.

Guo Sheng, an official from the ministry, stated that more than 80% of these trips will be made by people driving private vehicles. “The nation’s highways are anticipated to handle approximately 63.5 million vehicles daily, about 1.8 times the usual non-holiday traffic,” Guo noted.

The country’s railways and civil aviation sectors are also expected to experience increased passenger numbers compared to the same period in 2019, signaling a robust rebound in domestic travel.

To facilitate the significant increase in mobility, China’s toll highways will waive fees for passenger vehicles with up to seven seats throughout the holiday period, according to the ministry.
