The Chinese Mainland to Resume Imports of Taiwan’s Agricultural and Fishery Products

The Chinese mainland has announced plans to resume imports of agricultural and fishery products from Taiwan, signaling a positive step towards enhanced cross-strait economic cooperation. On Sunday, the General Administration of Customs (GAC) stated that it will approve the import of wendan pomelo and other agricultural and fishery products from Taiwan, provided they meet the mainland’s quarantine requirements, which are based on scientific assessments and relevant laws and regulations.

Deputy Chief of the GAC, Zhao Zenglian, made the announcement during a meeting with a delegation from the Chinese Kuomintang (KMT), led by Fu Kun-chi. Zhao emphasized the GAC’s willingness to strengthen communication with the KMT and relevant authorities in Taiwan on resuming imports, on the common political basis of adhering to the 1992 Consensus and opposing “Taiwan independence.”

“We are ready to work closely with the KMT and relevant authorities in Taiwan to encourage industry players to enhance source management and implement practical and feasible rectification measures,” Zhao said.

Fu Kun-chi expressed optimism about the move, highlighting the potential benefits for Taiwan’s industries. “We hope that products from all sectors in Taiwan, especially our high-quality agricultural and fishery products, can successfully enter the mainland market,” he said.

The resumption of imports is expected to bolster economic ties across the Taiwan Strait, providing new opportunities for producers in Taiwan and meeting demand in the mainland. It reflects a mutual willingness to promote economic cooperation and improve the livelihoods of people on both sides.
