China’s rapid expansion of its green and low-carbon industry is reshaping the global landscape of sustainable development. In recent years, the nation has made significant strides in establishing a comprehensive green and low-carbon industrial system, contributing substantially to economic growth and environmental sustainability.
As of 2023, China is home to over 5,000 national-level green factories, 371 green industrial parks, and more than 600 enterprises specializing in green supply chain management. These developments highlight the country’s commitment to transitioning towards a more sustainable industrial model.
Innovation in green and low-carbon technologies has been at the forefront of this transformation. Between 2011 and 2020, China filed nearly 60 percent of the world’s patent applications for environment-related technological inventions, positioning it as a global leader in environmental technology innovation.
The production of green and low-carbon products has seen remarkable growth. In 2023, the output of electric vehicles, solar cells, and lithium-ion batteries for automobiles increased by 30.3%, 54%, and 22.8% year-on-year, respectively. Additionally, the production of green energy equipment such as hydroelectric generators, wind turbines, and charging stations grew significantly, all surpassing the overall economic growth rate.
Since 2012, China’s average annual economic growth has been 6.6%, with only a 3% annual increase in energy consumption. This efficiency has led to a 26.4% decrease in energy consumption per unit of GDP, equating to savings of 1.4 billion tonnes of standard coal and a reduction of 2.94 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. Such achievements underscore China’s leading role in global efforts to reduce energy intensity and combat climate change.
China’s commitment to green development not only benefits its own economy but also contributes to global sustainability efforts. As the country continues to innovate and invest in green technologies, it sets an example for sustainable industrial growth and offers valuable experiences and technologies to the global community.
