Taicang: A Hotspot for German Start-Ups in China’s Auto Industry

Taicang, Jiangsu Province—In March, entrepreneurs Jiang Xiaohua and Christopher Praetzas settled into their new apartment for talents in Taicang, a small city in east China’s Jiangsu Province. More than just the birthplace of their child, Taicang represents the future of their automotive technology start-up.

“Passenger car sales in China account for about a third of global sales, so it’s a very big market. Chinese brands are going high-end and smart, so I see a big opportunity here,” said Jiang, who has spent most of her career in automobile manufacturing. Her husband, Praetzas, shares her optimism about the potential that China offers.

The couple, who previously lived in Germany, spent three years researching Chinese markets and policies before making the move. “Taicang has a strong supply chain for the auto industry, including some German companies who were our partners,” Jiang told China Media Group (CMG). “There are also a lot of resources and government support for start-ups so that they can operate quickly. So, we chose to come here.”

Since opening their factory last June, Jiang and Praetzas have witnessed firsthand how Taicang fosters a supportive environment for foreign entrepreneurs. “Life in China is becoming more convenient with the recent implementation of more measures to optimize work, residence, and payment for foreigners staying in China,” the couple noted.

Taicang’s appeal to German companies is not new. The city has long been a preferred destination for German businesses looking to tap into China’s booming economy. With its robust infrastructure, strategic location, and favorable policies, Taicang continues to attract foreign investment, particularly in the automotive sector.

For global investors and business professionals, Taicang exemplifies the opportunities available in China’s dynamic markets. Academics and researchers may find the city a case study in successful international cooperation and economic development. As China continues to open its doors to foreign talent and investment, cities like Taicang stand at the forefront of this exciting growth.
