Chinese Premier Li Qiang met with World Bank President Ajay Banga on Monday in Beijing, emphasizing the importance of strengthening the partnership between China and the World Bank. Over the past four decades, China, as the largest developing country, has collaborated closely with the World Bank, yielding fruitful results.
Premier Li highlighted China’s willingness to build a closer partnership by enhancing cooperation in knowledge exchange, rural revitalization, and healthcare. He emphasized the significance of the Global Development Initiative and expressed China’s commitment to contributing positively to global challenges such as climate change.
Regarding the World Bank’s reform agenda, Li expressed support and hopes that development remains at its core. He advocated for increased input in established areas of poverty reduction and development, greater representation of developing countries, and a more effective role for the World Bank in global governance.
Li reassured that China’s economic fundamentals sustaining long-term growth remain unchanged. He stated that China will continue to implement macro-control measures, introduce policies to maintain stable expectations and growth, and foster new growth drivers. Efforts will be made to create a market-oriented, law-based, and world-class business environment, deepen reforms in key areas, safeguard fair competition, and protect the legitimate rights and interests of all enterprises.
World Bank President Ajay Banga expressed gratitude for China’s long-term support and appreciated the sound operations of the bank’s cooperation projects in China. He acknowledged China as a model of cooperation between the World Bank and other countries. Banga emphasized the bank’s willingness to deepen cooperation with China in healthcare, green transformation, and climate change, contributing to China’s high-quality development.
