G20 Summit 2023: Experts Discuss China’s Role in Global Economic Collaboration

The 2023 G20 Summit in India was a pivotal moment for global leaders to seek consensus amid pressing global challenges. As the host nation, India faced the formidable task of bridging divisions among member countries on critical issues such as climate change and debt relief.

In a recent discussion with CGTN’s Guan Xin, a panel of experts provided deep insights into the outcomes of the summit and the role of China in fostering international cooperation. The panel included Sourabh Gupta, resident senior fellow at the Institute for China-America Studies; Nelson Wong, vice chairman and president of the Shanghai Centre for RimPac Strategic and International Studies; Yose Rizal Damuri, executive director of the Center for Strategic and International Studies; and John Ross, senior fellow of the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies at Renmin University.

Bridging Global Divides

The experts highlighted the significant efforts made by G20 leaders to overcome differences and focus on shared global priorities. Sourabh Gupta emphasized the importance of collaborative action, stating that “multilateral cooperation is essential in addressing global economic challenges and fostering sustainable growth.”

Nelson Wong noted that India’s role as host presented an opportunity to bring diverse nations together. “India’s position allowed for a unique platform to mediate discussions, especially on economic strategies that involve major economies like China,” he remarked.

China’s Collaborative Potential

The panel delved into how China can collaborate with other countries to promote economic growth. Yose Rizal Damuri pointed out that China’s vast market and investment capabilities are crucial for global development. “China’s participation in international initiatives can drive progress in infrastructure, technology, and innovation,” he said.

John Ross added that China’s commitment to open trade and investment can help alleviate global economic pressures. “By engaging in policies that support mutual growth, China and its partners can navigate the complexities of the current economic landscape,” Ross asserted.

Focus on Climate Change and Debt Relief

The discussion also touched upon the critical issues of climate change and debt relief. The experts agreed that collaborative efforts are necessary to address environmental concerns and support nations struggling with debt. They called for actionable strategies that involve all major economies.
