Hainan Champions Green Development with Record Air Quality Improvements

South China’s Hainan Province is forging ahead in green development, leveraging its natural environment and low-carbon advantages to build a modern industrial system. In recent years, Hainan has actively promoted sustainable industries, supporting the high-quality development of the Hainan Free Trade Port and seizing opportunities in emerging fields.

The province’s commitment to environmental stewardship is yielding tangible results. According to data from Hainan’s news briefing on air pollution prevention and treatment, in 2023, the province’s air quality reached historic highs. The proportion of days with excellent air quality exceeded 80 percent for eight consecutive years, marking a significant achievement in environmental protection.

Notably, the PM2.5 concentration in four cities and counties—Sansha, Wuzhishan, Lingshui, and Qiongzhong—has reached 10 micrograms per cubic meter or less. This level meets stringent air quality standards and underscores Hainan’s dedication to creating a healthier environment for its residents.

These strides in green development are painting a new picture of a low-carbon, high-quality future for Hainan. By developing and expanding new productive forces, the province aims to harness its natural assets to promote sustainable economic growth. As Hainan continues on this path, it serves as a model for other regions striving for green modernization and environmental excellence.
