China’s Foreign Trade Shows Positive Signs Amid Global Challenges

China’s exports and imports are showing promising signs despite a challenging global trade environment, according to Commerce Minister Wang Wentao.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday during the ongoing session of the country’s top legislature, Wang highlighted a surge in trade activities during the Spring Festival holiday—a period typically considered a lull for imports and exports.

Wang noted that the trade recovery, which began in September 2023, is projected to continue, albeit with a possible dip in March due to a high comparison base from the previous year.

“China will work with global trading partners to deepen cooperation in the production and supply chain and build an industrial and supply chain that is inclusive, resilient, and sustainable,” Wang said.

The minister emphasized promoting cross-border e-commerce exports by improving customs clearance procedures, taxation, and foreign exchange policies. Efforts will also be made to accelerate the development of supply chains and ecosystems that support the growth of cross-border e-commerce.

To enhance trade digitization, China will utilize pilot zones for global digital trade in the Greater Bay Area, the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, and foreign trade transformation and upgrade bases, Wang added.

Furthermore, China intends to foster green trade development by supporting the export of high-quality, high-technology, and high added-value green and low-carbon products.
