China’s economic planning chief expressed confidence on Wednesday that the nation’s targeted GDP growth of around 5 percent for 2024 is within reach with enhanced efforts.
Zheng Shanjie, director of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), spoke at a press conference during the ongoing session of the National People’s Congress in Beijing. He emphasized that China possesses the confidence, capabilities, and favorable conditions to achieve this year’s economic and social development goals.
“The growth target aligns with the objectives set out in the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) and reflects the potential and realities of the Chinese economy,” Zheng stated. He highlighted that steady progress has been made in various sectors, laying a solid foundation for sustainable development.
The press conference, part of the second session of the 14th National People’s Congress, brought together domestic and international media to discuss issues related to development and reform, financial and budgetary policies, commerce, and financial securities. Officials provided insights into China’s economic strategies and responded to questions from journalists.
China’s commitment to maintaining a stable and robust economy comes amid global uncertainties and challenges. The government has outlined measures to boost domestic demand, support innovation, and foster a more open and inclusive economic environment. These efforts are expected to contribute significantly to achieving the projected growth rate.
