China Boosts Support for Migrant Workers Returning to Work After Spring Festival
Authorities across the Chinese mainland are intensifying efforts to ensure migrant workers can smoothly return to their workplaces or find new employment opportunities as the nation resumes work after the Spring Festival holiday.
From bustling job fairs in urban centers to innovative online recruitment in snow-covered regions, government departments at all levels are mobilizing resources to facilitate employment and transportation for millions of workers.
The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, along with eight other government departments, has launched a special campaign featuring a series of online and offline activities running from January 25 to April 8. These initiatives aim to connect job seekers with enterprises in need, boosting employment and economic recovery in the post-holiday period.
Vibrant Job Fairs Ignite Employment Opportunities
Offline job fairs have been held in cities ranging from southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality to east China’s Shandong Province. On February 20, Banan District in Chongqing held its first job fair of the Year of the Dragon, where 50 enterprises offered more than 2,500 jobs. The event attracted a large number of job seekers eager to embark on new career paths. More than 30 job fairs are scheduled in the district until the end of March, providing ample opportunities for employment.
Innovative Online Recruitment Amid Extreme Weather
In regions affected by extreme weather conditions, local authorities have adopted online job fairs to promote employment. In Xuchang City, Henan Province, heavy snow hindered traffic and travel. Wang Bo, head of the Bureau of Human Resources and Social Security of Xuchang City, stated that local authorities utilized online platforms, including employment-related mini programs on WeChat, to carry out recruitment activities. This approach provided convenience for enterprises to recruit local talent without the limitations imposed by adverse weather.
Facilitating Transportation for Migrant Workers
Beyond employment, authorities are assisting with the transportation of migrant workers through chartered trains, flights, and buses. In Qianxinan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, southwest China’s Guizhou Province, local officials organized free chartered flights and buses to help residents return to work.
One of the beneficiaries, Tang Hongyao, expressed his gratitude for the free chartered bus that took him back to Guangzhou City in south China. “In past years, it was hard to buy a ticket back to Guangzhou,” Tang said. “The free chartered bus not only sent me and my wife directly to our workplace but also saved us 700 yuan (nearly $97).”
These comprehensive efforts reflect the government’s commitment to supporting migrant workers, who are a vital component of the nation’s workforce. By facilitating employment opportunities and easing transportation challenges, authorities are helping to bolster economic activity and improve livelihoods across the Chinese mainland.
