World Bank Pledges Support to Tunisia on Water Scarcity and Climate Change

The World Bank has reaffirmed its commitment to assist Tunisia in developing strategies to tackle the profound impacts of water scarcity and climate change. Speaking at a regional conference on climate and development in Tunis on Friday, Ferid Belhaj, World Bank Group Vice President for the Middle East and North Africa, emphasized the urgency of implementing policies that offer immediate solutions, particularly in sectors like agriculture that are heavily affected by these challenges.

“It is crucial to have policies that provide urgent solutions for sectors affected by water scarcity and climate challenges, especially agriculture,” Belhaj noted during the conference’s opening session.

He also announced that Tunisia is set to receive new financial support from the World Bank in the coming days to address food security concerns exacerbated by environmental issues. This assistance aims to bolster Tunisia’s resilience against the adverse effects of climate change and to promote sustainable development practices.

The conference gathered experts, policymakers, and stakeholders from across the region to discuss collaborative approaches to climate resilience and sustainable resource management. Tunisia’s efforts to confront water scarcity are particularly significant, as the country grapples with prolonged droughts and the increasing demands of a growing population.

The World Bank’s support is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing Tunisia’s capacity to implement effective water management strategies, invest in climate-smart agriculture, and secure food supplies for its citizens.
