China is embarking on a significant overhaul of its land management strategies, integrating green transition and high-tech innovation to enhance food security and sustainable development. At the fourth meeting of the central commission for deepening overall reform of the 20th Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee held on Monday, key agendas included land management, promoting an overall green transition, and accelerating comprehensive innovation.
Qu Qiang, a research fellow at Beijing Foreign Studies University, emphasized the critical role of efficient land usage in feeding China’s vast population. “China feeds about 20 percent of the world’s population with less than 10 percent of global arable land,” he explained. Efficient land use and better allocation of land resources are essential to guarantee food security and supply.
Green transition is central to this effort. Qu highlighted that embracing green practices not only improves land use but also addresses challenges such as land scarcity. “High-tech development is the best answer to issues like shortage of land supply,” he noted. China’s economic structure is transitioning towards more science-oriented development, with technology upgrades playing a pivotal role.
Innovation is driving this transformation. Qu shared his experience visiting factories utilizing advanced technologies like 3D printing. “Everything is not spreading out in a horizontal way, but built more vertically,” he described, illustrating how such innovations enhance land usage efficiency.
Enterprises are key players in fostering innovation, according to Qu. He advocated for elevating the role of academic institutions in fundamental and theoretical research while emphasizing support for enterprises and private sectors. “Nurturing a more market-oriented funding and financial system is essential to further support innovation,” he suggested.
China’s commitment to green transition and technological innovation in land management reflects its broader goals of sustainable development and improved living standards. By embracing these strategies, China aims to address its land resource challenges while contributing to global food security.
