China Leads Global Renewable Energy Transition: IRENA Deputy Director-General

China is playing a leading role in the global transition towards renewable energy, according to Gauri Singh, Deputy Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). Speaking to Xinhua on Monday at the World Government Summit in Dubai, Singh highlighted China’s significant contributions to renewable energy development worldwide.

“China has always played a very important role in renewable energy,” Singh remarked, extending her greetings to the Chinese people for the upcoming Chinese New Year, which falls on February 10. “The Year of the Dragon embodies the spirit of courage, vitality, and ambition. We all need to be ambitious in how we view our common future and the future of the planet.”

IRENA, comprising 169 members, is a leading global intergovernmental organization promoting the worldwide transition to renewable energy. The agency supports countries in their energy transitions and provides up-to-date data and analyses on green technology innovation, policy, finance, and investment.

Singh emphasized that China’s role as a manufacturing hub has driven down the costs of green technologies, enabling many countries to advance their national renewable energy plans more smoothly. “Thanks to China’s efforts, renewable energy technologies have become more accessible and affordable globally,” she said.

According to IRENA’s “Renewable Capacity Statistics 2023” published last March, China accounted for approximately 48 percent of the increase in global total renewable capacity in 2022. This significant contribution underscores China’s commitment to sustainable development and its leadership in the clean energy sector.
