China has pledged to lead international efforts in reshaping education through artificial intelligence (AI) and digital innovation, as outlined at the 2025 World Digital Education Conference (WDEC) in Wuhan. Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang emphasized the nation’s commitment to building an inclusive, tech-driven education system during the three-day event attended by global policymakers, educators, and tech experts.
With studies predicting AI could replace 40% of current core skills by 2030, the conference highlighted urgent shifts in pedagogy. “Education must evolve from knowledge transfer to fostering critical thinking and adaptability,” noted one panelist, as demonstrations showcased AI-enabled classrooms and teacher-student-machine collaboration models.
Key outcomes included a ministerial dialogue between China and ASEAN members on talent development strategies and the release of China’s Smart Education White Paper. The Global Digital Education Development Index 2025, unveiled at the event, provides benchmarks for measuring progress in 135 countries and regions.
Practical workshops allowed delegates to observe digital learning tools in Wuhan schools and vocational colleges, underscoring China’s push for infrastructure connectivity and cross-border resource sharing. Ethical guidelines for AI integration emerged as a recurring theme, with multiple nations endorsing collaborative frameworks for data security and equitable access.
