US Chamber Warns Tariffs Threaten Small Businesses, Urges Relief

Business Group Sounds Alarm Over Economic Risks

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has issued a stark warning that tariffs are causing "irreparable harm" to small businesses and could push the economy toward recession. In a letter sent to senior White House officials this week, the influential business group called for immediate action to alleviate financial pressures on import-reliant companies.

Calls for Emergency Measures

The Chamber proposed three urgent measures: automatic tariff exclusions for all small business importers, a streamlined process for companies to request exemptions if jobs are at risk, and waivers for products not produced domestically. Suzanne P. Clark, the Chamber’s President and CEO, emphasized that everyday goods like coffee, bananas, and minerals face unavoidable price hikes due to tariffs. "Raising prices on these essentials only hurts families already struggling," she stated.

Widespread Supply Chain Strain

Supply chain disruptions and rising costs are reportedly squeezing profit margins for businesses reliant on imported materials. Retailers, including major chains like Target, have flagged concerns about inventory shortages and consumer price spikes. The Chamber’s letter follows growing unease among U.S. industries about prolonged trade policy impacts.
