Global Pushback Against US ‘Reciprocal Tariffs’ Intensifies

The global community has united in opposition to new U.S. tariffs, with leaders warning of widespread economic disruption following President Donald Trump's latest executive order. The policy, signed Wednesday, introduces a 10% 'minimum baseline tariff' on many imports and hikes rates for select trading partners, effective April 5. Concurrently, longstanding 25% tariffs on foreign automobiles took effect Thursday.

The United Nations voiced concerns about 'economic protectionism' threatening global growth, while European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde emphasized the tariffs' role in amplifying worldwide uncertainty. Meanwhile, the Chinese Foreign Ministry reaffirmed its stance against 'reciprocal tariffs,' stating that protectionism 'has no way out' and pledging responsive countermeasures.

Analysts warn these moves could destabilize supply chains and market confidence, particularly impacting Asian economies deeply integrated with U.S. trade networks. The developments come as multinational institutions urge dialogue to prevent further escalation.
