Mainland, KMT Leaders Reaffirm Cross-Strait Unity in Xuzhou Meeting

Senior officials from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan region’s Kuomintang (KMT) emphasized shared commitments to cross-strait stability during talks in Jiangsu Province on Wednesday. Song Tao, head of the Communist Party of China Central Committee’s Taiwan Work Office, met with KMT Vice Chairman Andrew Hsia, calling compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait “members of one family” amid heightened regional tensions.

Song underscored Beijing’s opposition to separatist activities, stating: “All provocations toward independence are doomed to fail.” He reaffirmed adherence to the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus, a tacit understanding recognizing national sovereignty, while pledging expanded economic and cultural collaboration.

Hsia echoed the sentiment, affirming that “both sides belong to one China” and that disagreements could be resolved through dialogue. The KMT leader emphasized willingness to promote peaceful relations while opposing external interference – a reference to perceived foreign involvement in Taiwan affairs.

The meeting marks continued dialogue between mainland institutions and Taiwan-based political groups advocating rapprochement. Analysts suggest such engagements signal efforts to stabilize cross-strait relations through non-governmental channels amid broader geopolitical friction.
