Chinese Rescue Team Deploys to Myanmar After 7.9 Magnitude Earthquake

A 37-member Chinese medical rescue team from Yunnan province has mobilized to assist Myanmar following a devastating 7.9-magnitude earthquake on March 28. The tremor, one of the strongest recorded in the region this year, triggered widespread destruction and casualties.

The team, equipped with advanced search-and-rescue technology including life detectors, portable satellites, and drones, departed Kunming Changshui International Airport with emergency supplies. Their mission focuses on aiding recovery efforts in affected zones, where infrastructure damage has complicated relief operations.

Myanmar authorities report at least 144 fatalities and 732 injuries, with the disaster’s impact extending beyond its borders. In Bangkok, Thailand, a collapsed construction site claimed 10 lives, underscoring the quake’s regional reach.

This deployment highlights cross-border collaboration in disaster response, with China leveraging its proximity and expertise to support a neighbor in crisis. The effort aligns with broader Asian initiatives to strengthen regional emergency preparedness amid increasing seismic activity.
