Guangdong Textile Factories Embrace Tech and E-Commerce Amid Global Shifts

Textile manufacturers in Guangdong are accelerating digital transformations to strengthen supply chains and expand market reach, with Shantou City emerging as a regional hub for innovation. At the Chaoshan International Textile and Garment Exhibition this week, industry leaders showcased automated production systems and AI-driven design tools, signaling a strategic pivot to value-added products.

New data reveals Shantou's apparel sector attracted 21 billion yuan ($2.9 billion) in investments during the first half of 2024 – a 36% year-on-year increase. Private enterprises accounted for 78% of the capital inflow, focusing on cross-border e-commerce platforms and sustainable textiles.

'Global retailers' demand volatility pushed us to build direct consumer channels through livestream sales and virtual showrooms,' said Lin Wei, a factory owner exhibiting IoT-enabled inventory management solutions. Over 60% of surveyed manufacturers reported adopting smart manufacturing systems to offset labor costs.

While international orders dipped 12% Q1 2024, domestic high-end apparel sales grew 22%, driven by rising Asian middle-class consumption. Analysts note the sector's resilience reflects China's dual-circulation strategy, balancing export capabilities with domestic market potential.
