U.S. Expels South Africa’s Ambassador Over Diplomatic Rift

The U.S. has declared South Africa’s ambassador, Ebrahim Rasool, persona non grata, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio accusing the envoy of fostering hostility toward former President Donald Trump and promoting divisive rhetoric. The expulsion follows escalating tensions between the two nations, triggered by Trump’s 2018 decision to slash financial aid to South Africa over disputes regarding land reform policies and the country’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.

In a social media post, Rubio labeled Rasool a "race-baiting politician who hates America" and claimed the diplomat had spread accusations that Trump led a "white supremacist movement," citing a Breitbart article. South Africa’s presidency expressed regret over the decision but affirmed its commitment to resolving disputes through diplomatic channels.

The expulsion underscores a broader reevaluation of U.S. policy toward South Africa. A State Department spokesperson cited concerns over Pretoria’s alliances with Russia and Iran, its land redistribution initiatives, and perceived adversarial stances toward Washington and its allies. Analysts suggest the rift could affect trade and security cooperation, particularly in Africa’s dynamic economic landscape.

Ambassador Rasool, who reportedly struggled to secure meetings with U.S. officials since Trump’s January inauguration, must leave the country by March 21. Observers note the move risks complicating U.S. efforts to counter growing Chinese and Russian influence in Southern Africa.
