IOC Provisively Recognizes World Boxing, Paving Way for Olympic Return in 2028

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has granted provisional recognition to World Boxing, marking a significant step toward the sport's inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics.

Following the IOC's decision to exclude the International Boxing Association (IBA) from the Olympic Movement in 2023 due to inadequate governance and financial reforms, the boxing events at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics were overseen directly by the IOC.

World Boxing, established in 2023, has quickly expanded to include 78 members across five continents. This recognition is contingent upon meeting specific criteria, including sufficient global membership, adherence to sports integrity processes implemented during the Paris Games, robust governance structures, revenue assurances, and commitment to the World Anti-Doping Code.

The provisional status allows World Boxing to advance its efforts toward Olympic inclusion in 2028, overcoming one of the primary obstacles previously hindering the sport’s return to the Olympic program.

Boris van der Vorst, president of World Boxing, expressed optimism about the IOC's decision. \"This is a very significant day for everyone connected with the sport of boxing in the Olympic movement,\" he stated. Van der Vorst emphasized the critical importance of maintaining boxing's place in the Olympics for the sport's future and outlined the ongoing commitment to enhancing the sport's governance and integrity.

The IOC's move to suspend and eventually strip the IBA of recognition was a rare and decisive action, highlighting the organization's commitment to upholding high standards within the Olympic Movement. As World Boxing moves forward, stakeholders remain hopeful that boxing will secure its position in the upcoming Olympic Games.
