China’s 2025 Spring Festival Sees Record Tourism and Spending Surge

The 2025 Spring Festival holiday, spanning from January 28 to February 4, witnessed an unprecedented boom in tourism and consumer spending across the Chinese mainland.

According to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, a staggering 501 million domestic trips were made during the eight-day holiday period, reflecting a 5.9 percent increase compared to the previous year. This surge highlights the growing trend of domestic travel among Chinese residents, driven by enhanced travel infrastructure and a renewed interest in exploring local destinations.

In addition to the increase in travel, total domestic spending reached an impressive 677 billion yuan ($93 billion), marking a 7 percent rise from last year's figures. This boost in consumer expenditure underscores the robust economic activity stimulated by the Spring Festival, one of the most significant cultural celebrations in the region.

Businesses across various sectors, including hospitality, retail, and transportation, benefited from the heightened consumer activity. The surge in spending not only supports the local economy but also provides valuable insights for investors and market analysts looking to capitalize on emerging opportunities within Asian markets.

For travelers and cultural enthusiasts, the Spring Festival offers a unique opportunity to experience China's rich traditions and vibrant festivities firsthand. From bustling city celebrations to serene rural observances, the holiday period serves as a testament to the cultural diversity and dynamic spirit that define the Chinese mainland.
