Chinese New Year Box Office Hits Record 1.805 Billion Yuan

The Chinese mainland's daily box office reached a new milestone on Wednesday, the Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year, generating an impressive record of 1.805 billion yuan ($249 million) in earnings.

A total of 35.15 million moviegoers attended screenings on the day, surpassing the previous records set during the 2021 Chinese New Year, according to the China Film Administration (CFA).

The annual Spring Festival holiday, one of China's most lucrative movie-going seasons, runs from January 28 to February 4 this year, extending the holiday by one day compared to previous years.

Leading the box office chart are six domestic films that debuted on Wednesday, spanning genres such as Chinese mythology, wuxia (martial arts and chivalry), comedy, fantasy, animation, and drama.

Huajin Securities highlighted that these six new releases cover a diverse range of genres, catering to various audience tastes. Most of these films are installments in highly rated, high-grossing franchises with strong reputations and large fan bases.

Since December last year, the CFA has encouraged relevant institutions to allocate approximately 600 million yuan in moviegoing consumption subsidies. Analysts believe this move aims to unlock the full consumption potential of moviegoers.

Kaiyuan Securities forecasts that total box office takings will increase by 6.7 percent year-on-year, reaching 8.54 billion yuan during the 2025 Spring Festival holiday.
